The Watts Family own Iris Vineyard near Mokelumne River, a major watershed that runs out of the Sierra Foothills. The vineyard is named after the many irises that Janet Watts has planted on the property. A picture of an iris also graces the label of the family’s wines.
The Iris Vineyard is located in the northern part of the San Joaquin Valley. The climate here is quite moderate with ocean breezes blowing in from the San Francisco Bay and Sacramento Delta. This is one of the climatic features responsible for Lodi’s enviable warm days and cool nights.
Although they have been growing grapes for 4 generations, they made their first wine in 1999 (an Old Vine Zinfandel). 2003 is the Watts Family’s most recent vintage of their inaugural wine. Made with grapes from Pescador Vineyard, it has dark fruit and cocoa flavors. 550 cases of this wine were produced. The 2002 Dos Amores is a well-balanced blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon and 35% Cabernet Franc. It has black currant and peppery flavors. 800 cases of this wine have been made.
